Video Transcript:

Let me ask you a question. Do you like barbecue? In a minute, I’m going to show you how to protect your shoreline property while enjoying a fee barbecue dinner at the same time.

But first let me ask you a couple more questions. How much property tax do you pay each year? Do you feel that you’re getting your money’s worth? Do you feel like the City of Fort Worth cares about you, your property, or the lake? Are you happy with what’s going on with the dredging, the roads, sewer and water, eminent domain, or park conditions? Are you on a lease and are worried about whether you will get the chance to buy your property? Do you worry about what they city is going to do next around the lake?

If you do, then you are not alone. I believe that there is widespread discontent around the shoreline with paying high taxes and getting very little in return. The good news is that if you and I and everyone else on the shoreline work as a team, we can change everything.

So how do we do this? You have to understand that all issues lead to one place and one place only - Fort Worth City Council. If we have a supportive councilman and a supportive mayor, then we can solve all of these issues. Without this support, we are dead in the water.

So how do we get support? We have to show that we are an active, vibrant block of voters who play as a team. You’re on the team, I’m on the team, everyone on the shoreline is on the team. If we want to “win the game,” that is we want to get these problems solved, then we have to score points. So how do we score points? We vote. Every vote is a point. And believe me, every elected official on the Fort Worth City Council counts points.

Now, do we all need to vote for the same candidate - not necessarily. You see if you vote for one candidate, we get a point. If I vote for the other candidate we get another point. Even though we voted for two different candidates, we get two points.

You see, at the end of this election, people are going to count up our points. They won’t know who we voted for, but they will know that we voted. If we have a lot of points, that is we have a lot of voter to show up to vote, then we will become extremely important and we will get our issues addressed.

I cannot overemphasize that this IS the game. You can write letters to your councilman until your pen runs dry. You can email the mayor until your fingers fall off. You can storm city hall and make speeches until you are blue and hoarse. You can carry picket signs until the soles of your shoes wear out. But none of that has even a fraction of the power of your one vote.

You see, city elections are different than any other election. Very few people vote in the city election. Those that do vote show that they are serious about their issues. At the end of the election, elected officials know every person that voted and more importantly, they know why they voted. If we all play as a team and we all vote, we will change the game.

So what do we do now? I’ve got two very good pieces of news for you. The first is that the hard work has been done. The second is that there is free Barbecue in your future. On Saturday, April 9th at 11:30AM, there will be a shoreline voter rally with free barbecue for everyone. All mayor candidates and all city council candidates will be there. You heard me correctly. All the candidates will be there. So why are we so important that all the candidates would show up? Because they know we are now playing as a team and they know we are now playing to win. By playing as a team, you and I have suddenly become very important.

All four neighborhood associations on the shoreline are working together on this. It is that important. We now have the upper hand and the entire city is watching you and me. If we work together, we will win. Right now, the team needs you, the lake needs you, and if you care about your property at all, you will be at that rally. Plan to be at Grace Baptist Church (at Las Vegas Trail and 820) at 11:30AM on Saturday, April 9th. I cannot overemphasize how important your one vote is. You need to be there. Put this on your calendar right now.

We’re in this together.

I’m Michael Dallas
